Ahnu Chukka Retrospective

The Ahnu Chukka boots indeed were a sturdy pair. A solid shoe with a modern styling perfect, while new, for a dapper young man with outdoorsy pretensions. Suitable for work, for play, and waterproofed for rain. Truly a shoe for all seasons.

In the past few months, I began to feel self-conscious, as the shoes I loved showed signs of their fervent use and intense wear. The leather had lost its sheen, and the rubber had peeled away from the sole ever so slightly. I continued to port them to work and everywhere else, but always carrying the thought, in the back of my mind, that one day I must carry on alone without them. They were still perfectly reliable, yet no longer fitting for the man I had become.

Tonight, on the way home, I began to admire a sleeping homeless man on the subway. His hands were big and strong, with paint chips stuck in the nails. His face showed marks of a man who had lived, but not thoroughly badly. A bit worse for wear, but still sturdy.  Exactly like my shoes.

He was wearing the type of slippers that are ideal for the banya. But really not so good for a homeless man in winter.

When I reached my stop on the train, I took off my shoes and patted him on the leg. He didn’t stir. I placed my shoes on top of his shoulders and walked home barefoot in socks.

I feel that I have done something very good for my shoes.

Did you measure his feet? They look pretty big…

Yes, he was a big man. I think his feet were around 12 or 12.5. My shoes were 11.5 with a bit of give. It’s possible he wasn’t even homeless or shoeless, of course. But I calculated that he would appreciate a good shoe when he woke up and saw one.

so funny. good move. I am 40 now, so i’m planning to buy some adult shoes, the shiny kind. Any suggestions?
