First training for the 10k Harry Chapin Run Against Hunger

gruntwork

5.2 mile jog

As part of my effort to train for the 10k Harry Chapin Run Against Hunger, I did a 5.2 mile jog this evening.  Judging by the map, I suppose it must be nice to be able to jog by the water for two legs of the route.  It’s hard to imagine those poor suckers who don’t live near accessible water – I take it for granted but enjoy rubbing it in your face.

At about mile 2, I felt like a large stomach cramp, probably as a result of eaten organic while in Europe for a month and not enough kefir.  And probably having something to do with having smoked 2-3 cigarettes while out empathizing with newly single ultimate frisbee champion Ben about a week ago plus another one two nights ago while out at the Bohemian Beer Garden with triathlon competitor Chris “Person of the Day NYC August 19“, who may also run on Sunday.  Disgusting habit.

But by mile 3, somewhere around the edge of the Plumb Beach Channel, I was feeling good.  My pace had slowed considerably, but the miles didn’t seem to make much difference after that.

If I can maintain that stamina while going up the sort of hills Harry Chapin never sung about, I’ll be in fine shape to take 200th place on Sunday.

Acquiring a Gun, Part I (How to Apply for a New York City Rifle & Shotgun Permit from the NYPD)

general

Officer Martinez: Hello, Handguns, this is Officer Martinez, how can I help you?

Well-spoken male caller: Hi, I’m interested in applying for a rifle and shotgun permit, and I want to make sure I have the correct documents ready before I make the trek out there.

Officer Martinez: We don’t do rifles and shotguns, only handguns…. Hold on…. [yelling to co-worker]…. Shotguns?…. [inaudible]….. Okay… 718-520-9300

Well-spoken male caller: That’s the Rifle and Shotgun permit division.

Officer Martinez: Yes.

Well-spoken male caller: Great.  Thanks.

Officer Rodriguez: Rifle and Shotguns.  Officer Rodriguez speaking.

Well-spoken male caller: Hi, I’m interested in applying for the rifle and shotgun permit, and I want to make sure I have the correct documents ready before I make the trek out there.

Officer Rodriguez: Do you have a computer?

Well-spoken male caller: Yes.  If you’re going to tell me to check out the web site, I’ve already done that.  But I want to double-check that I have everything prepared correctly, since the information is unclear.  What forms do I need notarized?

Officer Rodriguez: It should say that on the forms.

Well-spoken male caller: Yes, but I wanted to double-check.

Officer Rodriguez: Everything should be on the form.

Well-spoken male caller: Okay.  Where are you located?

Officer Rodriguez: 120-55 Queens Boulevard.  In the basement.  Room B-11.

Well-spoken male caller:  You said in the basement.  Can you repeat the room number?

Officer Rodriguez: Yes.  Room B eleven.

Well-spoken male caller:  And you’re open Monday through Friday.

Officer Rodriguez: Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 3:30pm.

Well-spoken male caller:  Thanks.
